    What is Thai Massage?

    Traditional Thai Massage is a therapeutic technique that dates back thousands of years. It is said that the Buddha used to receive Thai massage amongst the nuns and monks that were traveling with the Buddha, spreading Buddhism and these medicinal techniques all over Southeast Asia. Thai massage is performed fully clothed (in loose or athletic clothing) on a special mat on the floor (not a massage table). Thai massage uses different techniques including stretching and putting pressure to either open or constrict different Sen (energy) lines in the body to correct the flow of life energy. Sen (energy) lines correspond to different parts of the body, such as the bones, muscles, blood, and nerves. Some Sen (energy) lines also affect the mind and consciousness.

    Unfortunately this ancient practice is not covered by insurance unless performed by a regulated body such as an RMT.

    Thai massage is very beneficial for the body, mind and the spirit. There are many benefits to thai massage including:

      Thai massage incorporates the pushing of pressure points which will release tension in the body through putting pressure on the sen (energy) lines throughout the body. Any muscles in the body that are sore will feel relaxed and supple after treatment.

    • Lowers stress and anxiety:

      Too much stress can negatively affect mental and physical health. Chronic, or long-lasting, stress can lead to serious illnesses, including depression and cardiovascular disease. Thai massage relaxes the body through pressure and stretching techniques.

    • Boosts your energy:

      Thai massage was proven to boost your energy due to the pressure on the sen (energy) lines in the body. This practice will clear the energy flow throughout these lines in the body and in turn boost your energy while also leaving you feeling more relaxed.

    • Stimulates circulation:

      Thai massage can promote the circulation of both blood and lymph through the use of gentle stretches. These yoga-based stretches increase blood circulation, which fills the body’s tissues with oxygen. This helps promote cell growth and heart health.

    What to Expect During Thai Massage?

    A good way of visualizing Thai massage is by imagining that someone is arranging the body into different yoga poses, while you just lay there connecting to your breath. For a Thai massage, the client usually lies on the floor. A licensed thai massage therapist will slowly work the client’s body through various stretches and massaging positions. The therapist may use their hands, knees, legs, or feet to help manipulate the person’s body into different positions and to ease the tension in the muscles. I personally incorporate intuitive healing and the knowledge of the chakras and essential oils into the experience which gives it a unique flare.

    Frequency of Thai Massage?

    After a Thai massage, a person may feel very relaxed. However, they need to keep in mind that their muscles have been worked, stretched, and prodded. After a Thai massage, a person should rest and drink plenty of water and I highly recommend a very hot epsom salt bath post treatment. There are no specific guidelines for how often a person should get a Thai massage. If someone wishes to focus on a specific area of their body, they can choose to work with a Thai massage practitioner to schedule weekly or bi-weekly sessions until they are satisfied with the results. At that point, they can consider spacing out their appointments to a monthly or bi-monthly basis and focusing on maintaining the results.

    Pre-Thai Massage Rituals:

    People don’t really need a lot of preparation when coming in for a Thai massage but it’s important for clients to show up 10 minutes early to sign any necessary paperwork before the appointment. Be sure to arrive in or bring a change of clothes that are loose or tight fitting athletic clothing. Be sure to inform the practitioner about any injuries and your medical history to be sure Thai massage is suitable for you!
